CLTV plans to carry Thursday morning's funeral of its ace political reporter, Carlos Hernandez Gomez.
Hernandez Gomez died Sunday after a long battle with cancer. He was 36.
The mass at Chicago's St. John Cantius Catholic Church, 825 North Carpenter St., is set for 11 a.m. and will be in Latin. A priest will assist with CLTV's coverage.
President Barack Obama was among the many to pay tribute this week to Hernandez Gomez, who made his mark at Chicago Public Radio's WBEZ-FM 91.5 before moving to Chicago Tribune parent Tribune Co.'s CLTV cable channel.
"Our paths first crossed when I was a State Senator," the president said in a statement. "He was a throwback in the style of Chicago's storied political reporters.
"He loved Chicago, and he relentlessly sought to tell its story with the commitment to truth and the insatiable curiosity that any good reporter has to have," the president said. "I quickly learned that when you saw his sharp fedora in a crowd, hard questions were coming. But Carlos always played it straight."
Hernandez Gomez also worked in Chicago for Los Angeles' Spanish-language daily newspaper, La Opinion. He attended DePaul University and graduated from Quigley Preparatory Seminary North.
Survivors include his wife, WGN-Ch. 9 reporter Randi Belisomo Hernandez. Like the Chicago Tribune and CLTV, WGN is owned by Tribune Co.
