A five-year effort to double the power of Kovas Communications' north suburban WONX-AM (1590) has finally succeeded.
The Federal Communications Commission last week granted a construction permit to boost the Evanston time-brokered ethnic station's daytime signal to 7,000 watts, fully covering the market and paving the way for a sale by Tim Disa of Airtime Media.
To achieve the upgrade, Kovas also had to acquire and relocate three other area stations near the same dial position.
As a result, south suburban WCGO-AM (1600) will move to Jenison/Grand Rapids, Mich., west suburban WKKD-AM (1580) will move to Silvis, Ill., and northwest suburban WMCW-AM (1600) has gone off the air.
