Arbitron rollout jumps the gun
Ready or not, Chicago radio was jolted into the future Monday with a surprise package from Arbitron.
Two days earlier than expected (in order to thwart a legal challenge from opponents in New York), the company officially activated its Portable People Meter ratings service in Chicago and seven other markets.
Despite lingering questions throughout the industry, the move put an end to the paper diary method of surveying listenership and declared the new electronic meters as the only authorized system to measure ratings and determine advertising rates for radio.
As expected, the biggest local winners in the first three-month report were Bonneville International and Citadel Broadcasting.
