Fans provide a fitting eulogy at Eddie Schwartz's burial service
--------------------------------------
Eddie Schwartz, former king of overnight radio in Chicago who died Tuesday at 62, was remembered Friday at a sunny graveside service at Waldheim Jewish Cemetery in Forest Park.
His brother, Hal Ross, read a poem he said he'd once read to Eddie:
Acquainted with the Night
Robert Frost
I have been one acquainted with the night.
I have walked out in rain -- and back in rain.
I have outwalked the furthest city light.
I have looked down the saddest city lane.
I have passed by the watchman on his beat
And dropped my eyes, unwilling to explain.
I have stood still and stopped the sound of feet
When far away an interrupted cry
Came over houses from another street,
But not to call me back or say good-bye;
And further still at an unearthly height,
O luminary clock against the sky
Proclaimed the time was neither wrong nor right.
I have been one acquainted with the night.
Hal Ross then did something I haven't seen at other memorial services: He read aloud from comment boards attached to recent newspaper stories and blogs.
It made for a heartfelt and utterly appropriate eulogy.
As retired Sun-Times radio/TV columnist Rob Feder said to me afterwards, it was like Eddie was taking phone calls from his listeners one last time.
