Tribune Co. honchos Sam Zell and Randy Michaels might think twice before they tamper with radio flagship WGN.

Arbitron ratings released Monday showed the news/ talk outlet in first place overall -- as well as in first place during mornings, middays and afternoons. It was the first time WGN was No. 1 in a winter quarter (meaning without a boost from Cubs baseball) since 2004.

Station insiders attributed the strong performance to the unusual number of snow days this winter and interest in such major news events as the Feb. 14 shootings at Northern Illinois University.

CBS Radio bosses were ecstatic over WCFS, which debuted in November as adult contemporary Fresh FM. Exceeding expectations, it proved especially popular among young women.

CBS also pointed with pride to Top 40 WBBM-FM beating Clear Channel Radio rival WKSC among younger listeners, and sports/talk WSCR beating ESPN rival WMVP among adult men.

Steve Dahl's first full book as morning host on CBS adult hits WJMK was seen as a big success, although Jack FM dropped substantially in every other time of day.

Clear Channel rejoiced over strong showings for its urban stations -- WGCI and WVAZ -- in all of its target demographics. Doug Banks' return to the market ignited afternoon ratings on V103.

The market's top Spanish station for the first time was Univision Radio's Mexican classic hits WPPN.

Emmis Communications' combo of classic rock WLUP and alternative rock WKQX continued to have trouble.

Arbitron's winter survey ran from Jan. 10 to April 2.
