Certain stations don't want to give the perception that the person who's on their airwaves also works for "the competition". Therefore, if a reporter uses one name on Station X, they will have to use a different one on Station Y. It does come across a bit silly when you can pick out the voices, but that's what the stations want, and that's how it is.

And besides, I doubt the vast majority of listeners are interested in picking out the voices in the first place. So even if Joe Schmo on WXXX sounds oddly similar to John Doe on WYYY, almost no one's going to give it a second thought.
