It was never easy for a daytimer AM to make money in the suburbs of a major market that is saturated with stations, many of which can afford programming and audio processing of a quality beyond the reach of 1 kw stations barely making it.
But the thing these daytimers had going for them at one time was the ability to deliver a lot of locally oriented content, cheap block programming and spot schedules. For a variety of reasons (being on AM to begin with) they have been simply unable to compete with new forms of media and along with newspapers, are falling down under the onslaught of the Internet. What's surprising is that these stations stayed on as long as they did.
