87.7 is the new WLFM was supposed to stunt for a few weeks and then become "The Pulse," a dance music format like they have in New York.
Well, "The Pulse" folks pulled out of the project before it really began. The station, which has been billing itself as "The L" and playing a Country/Americana format that has made many people rather happy, saw the opportunity to flip on the Smooth Jazz bandwagon.
The following is an email I received from Pat Kelley, the new GM at WLFM:

Hello friends of Chicago radio...
As most of you are aware, after 22 years of Smooth Jazz WNUA has changed formats to Spanish. I'm sure it was a difficult decision to make, but also a perfect opportunity for the launch of a brand new station, WLFM 87.7 FM....
"The L". Over the next few months we are going to build a more innovative contemporary smooth jazz station custom made for Chicago.
I'm very pleased to announce this exciting news as the new SVP/General Manager of WLFM 87.7 FM.
The Chicago Market has embraced the jazz format since it's beginning. This city has a tremendous love and passion for smooth jazz based as based on past success. Hundreds of thousands of smooth jazz fans have attended sold-out concerts at Chicago Theatre, Grant Park, Navy Pier, Park Grill, the demand and popularity of this format is evident. If you've followed Chicago radio, you know the true connection that this city has always had with contemporary Jazz music.
WLFM is a full power signal with the transmitter located on top the Hancock building. More to come shortly.
Please feel free to call me with questions and/or ideas.....and enjoy your long holiday weekend.
Pat Kelley
SVP/General Manager
